Sensory Retraining

NeuroPhysio can help them to understand the impact this has on their function and plan an evidence based rehabilitation programme to improve their sensation and movement.

Sensation For Movement

Sensory problems after a stroke or other neurological injury are common and can result in clumsy, uncoordinated movements and ultimately lead to a further deterioration in involvement of the limb in day-to-day activities.

The ‘SENSe’ sensory rehabilitation programme is an intensive NeuroPhysio programme designed to improve the sensation of the affected limb.

Sensory rehabilitation as part of neuro physiotherapy after a neurological injury is often overlooked, but adequate sensation is crucial to be able to perceive the environment around you and to enable you to interact with it effectively.

Who is SENSe Sensory Retraining for?

People with altered sensation after a stroke or other neurological injury often describe:

  • Numbness
  • Pins & Needles
  • Dullness
  • Incoordination
  • Clumsiness
  • Loss of dexterity
  • Lack of joint positional awareness
  • Difficulty feeling different shapes and textures

Sensation can be retrained with NeuroPhysio’s comprehensive SENSe sensory rehabilitation programme.

What is the SENSe sensory rehabilitation programme?

The programme aims to rehabilitate the senses of touch and positional awareness which can lead to improvements in dexterity, coordination and the ability to perform daily activities effectively.

The SENSe sensory rehabilitation programme utilises the brain’s ability to learn and adapt. It is an intensive programme, typically consisting of three neuro physiotherapy consultations each week for four weeks.

The programme aims to rehabilitate the senses of touch and positional awareness which can lead to improvements in dexterity, coordination and the ability to perform daily activities effectively.

The SENSe programme has been shown to benefit people who have neurological impairments as a result of stroke, traumatic brain injury, acquired brain injury and others.

What are the benefits of SENSe sensory rehabilitation?

The amount of individual improvement in sensation varies, but most people seen at NeuroPhysio show a significant improvement in how their arm feels and how much they can use the arm and hand. Common neurological problems treated in the arm and hand include:

      • Reduced awareness of arm, hand or finger position
      • Reduced awareness of limb movement
      • Difficulty recognising everyday objects through touch
      • Hypersensitivity to touch
      • Difficulty controlling of grip
      • Reduced dexterity
      • Difficulty performing daily tasks such as dressing, grooming, and eating

The SENSe sensory rehabilitation programme at NeuroPhysio

At NeuroPhysio the SENSe programme is conducted by highly trained Neurological Physiotherapists, with 1:1 guidance and support throughout the treatment sessions.

Following the successful completion of the programme we provide a follow up appointment at 1 month and telephone follow up appointments at 3 and 6 months to ensure continued progress and to monitor improvements.

The level of sensory function will determine the nature of the treatment programme most appropriate. SENSe training will typically comprise of activities to train texture discrimination, sense of limb position, recognition of everyday objects, as well as the vital day to day occupational tasks that help transfer improvements in sensation to normal arm and hand function.

I've been working with James to help me regain mobility in the right side of my body for the last 2 years after a burst aneurysm and stroke in 2015. They are brilliant and are very understanding of your needs and difficulties. I'm so glad I found them.
