What is Neurological Physiotherapy?

Neurological Physiotherapy is a specialist area of physiotherapy concerning the treatment of conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord and the nerves connecting them to the rest of the body.

Injury and disease of the nervous system can cause a variety of different problems such as weakness, stiffness in the muscles, reduced sensation, a lack of awareness to one side, visual changes, impaired balance and reduced coordination. This can have a significant effect on a person’s ability to complete the activities that matter most to them and to be independent.

Neuro physios provide treatments that can be highly beneficial in assisting the recovery of movement, stability, sensation and the ability to complete day to day activities.

Who do you help?

Our Neurological Physiotherapists help children and adults with a wide range of injuries such as stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury and complex trauma. At NeuroPhysio we also see people with neurological disorders including multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Guillain Barre syndrome, peripheral neuropathy and balance disorders. Our Paediatric team also have extensive experience in helping children with muscular and skeletal conditions such as following surgery, sports injuries, knee pain, back pain, changes in walking and developmental delay.

What kind of treatments do you offer?

NeuroPhysio provides effective, targeted treatment. Out Physiotherapists maintain high levels of professional standards and training which means that our treatment approaches are constantly evolving to ensure they’re the very best.

Neurological Physiotherapy treatments can broadly be divided into those that look to directly change the nature of the condition and others that train the body to compensate for a loss of function or utilise aids and strategies to adapt to a permanent change.

NeuroPhysio treatments can therefore be very varied but it’s often important that they’re intensive, repetitive and specific to whatever movement or task you want to do. To achieve this we provide structured exercises supported by videos and photographs, hands-on treatment, video analysis and retraining of movement, assistive technology, splinting and community focussed activities.

Do you work with case managers and solicitors?

The NeuroPhysio team has extensive experience of working with Case Managers and solicitors to provide rehabilitation for client’s with complex needs during and following the litigation process. Our approach is aspirational, yet realistic, with the aim of maximising independence and maintaining health.

NeuroPhysio accepts instructions to complete Initial Needs Assessments (INA) to identify rehabilitation requirements and to provide recommendations for treatment, technology and equipment needs. Our reports are comprehensive, and our treatment programmes are goal directed and holistic. We welcome initial enquires and offer meet and greet consultations via video without charge to ensure that our Neurological Physiotherapist is the most appropriate for the client and to begin the process of establishing a therapeutic relationship.

How long are the appointments?

All NeuroPhysio consultations are one hour in duration, unless previously agreed. A comprehensive assessment may necessitate a longer initial meeting which would be agreed with you before taking place.

Our provision is however expanding so if you are outside of these areas please do make an enquiry and if we are unable to help we can point you in the right direction.

Is Neurological Physiotherapy only useful for people soon after their injury or diagnosis?

No, absolutely not! NeuroPhysio frequently help people in the early stages of their rehabilitation as well as those who have been living with a condition for years. We know that it’s certainly possible to make improvements several years after a neurological incident.

What is your cancellation policy?

NeuroPhysio requires 24-hours’ notice of any cancellation and failure to do so may result in the full fee being charged.

How do I make an appointment with NeuroPhysio?

NeuroPhysio consultations are by appointment only and can be arranged by contacting us on 0800 915 3288 or emailing hello@physio4you.co.uk.

Do I need a referral?

You do not need a referral to see a Neurological Physiotherapist, though we often work closely with other medical professionals. If you have any clinic letters or discharge reports relating to your treatment to date these can be useful to bring to your initial consultations however.

Can I use my insurance?

NeuroPhysio is registered with all major insurance providers but we recommend that you confirm authorisation with your provider before starting your course of treatment.

What should I bring with me?

We recommend that you wear comfortable clothing and bring any equipment (including walking aids) to the first appointment. If you have any letters or reports relating to your diagnosis or treatment this can be very useful for your Physiotherapist.

What happens in the assessment appointment?

NeuroPhysio assessments are comprehensive and specific to each person’s needs. Your Physiotherapist will discuss what has led you to seek treatment and find out a little about you and the impact that your condition is having on you before deciding upon the most appropriate method of assessment. This is likely to involve some specific testing of your strength, joint movement, muscle flexibility, coordination and sesation. Your physio will also want to see how you are able to move yourself and may want to observe you completing any problematic tasks.

At the end of the initial consultation we will always discuss the findings of our assessment and how they relate to the problems that you are experiencing, before agreeing the most suitable treatment approach. At NeuroPhysio we aim to start treating within the first session and will likely give you some specific advice or exercises to begin your rehabilitation.

Does your neuro physio clinic have wheelchair access?

Our NeuroPhysio clinic in Stevenage is fully accessible including a wheelchair accessible toilet. Parking is located close to the clinic and if required your Physiotherapist will be happy to come out to help you to find us.

How often will you need to see me?

This really depends on the nature of your condition, the problems that you are experiencing, your goals and how you would prefer to work. For some people a single session with some specific advice and an exercise prescription may be sufficient, whilst others may benefit most from a period of more intensive neurological rehabilitation. NeuroPhysio makes recommendations that are specific for each person we see as one size certainly does not fit all.

Testimonials

See what our customers have to say about us…

I've been working with James to help me regain mobility in the right side of my body for the last 2 years after a burst aneurysm and stroke in 2015. They are brilliant and are very understanding of your needs and difficulties. I'm so glad I found them.
